Big Brothers Big Sisters at CWRU School of MedicineThe Big Brothers Big Sisters program at CWRU SOM allows medical students to become mentors to elementary through high school aged youth around Greater Cleveland. The program is sponsored by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Cleveland and the Office of Urban Health at CWRU School of Medicine. Each medical student who joins the program is paired with a child through a formal mentorship that can last from one year to life. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Cleveland is not a one-size-fits-all program and offers both community-based and school-based mentoring programs to meet the needs of its diverse community of mentors and mentees. Although there are no prerequisites to participating, the program requires a commitment to attendance and a desire to make a positive impact on a young person’s life.

Mission Statement for School of Medicine Mentors:
The aims of the Big Brothers Big Sisters program at CWRU SOM are three-fold:
- To draw medical students outside of the classroom and into the real communities around them, facilitating a deeper understanding of the social determinants of health
- To provide an experience that cultivates passion for community engagement and leadership
- To explore the power of human connection as a tool for self-discovery, healing, and growth
