Addiction Medicine Interest Group

As part of a larger organization, Advantage Cleveland, the hope is to continue to grow this program in other neighborhoods throughout Cleveland. We hope to empower students to reach their full potential on the court and in the classroom. Comer y Aprender builds on Medical Spanish by providing opportunities for students to spend lunch with different members of the Spanish-speaking community in Cleveland to identify gaps in healthcare and ways to improve patient outcomes. Our 8-session curriculum includes topics spanning the road to residency, cranial and spine trauma, awake brain surgery, stroke treatment, seizures, and bioethics. A short case-based interactive session is led by the residents to start the program, followed by a longer interactive portion focusing on practical skills, simulations, and demonstrations of technology supported by industry vendors who supply the Neurosurgery department on CCF main campus. CIG hosts a multitude of educational and hands-on events, particularly during Block 4 of the preclinical curriculum, to serve as a supplement in students’ medical education. Farrell Foundation for Brain Health has multiple enrichment and wellness programs for individuals impacted by dementia/Alzheimer’s and other cognitive health issues. During the sessions, volunteers will join the Farrell Foundation's program directors in leading art projects and participating in music programs with community members. Case 4 Hope/Project Hope for the Homeless Student Leaders: Meha Srivastava, Nada Hentati Emails: [email protected], [email protected] Faculty Advisor: Dr. James Martin Case4Hope is a collaboration between CWRU SOM and Project Hope for the Homeless located in Painesville, Ohio that provides medical education to the guests at Project Hope. We hold sessions at Project Hope once a month to discuss mindfulness, mental health, smoking cessation, and any other health-related topics that they may want to discuss. Efforts have also focused on donations and fundraising. We are a group of students in partnership with Holy Rosary Church and the Diocese of Cleveland, and together we provide opportunities for faith formation, sacraments, fellowship, fun, and service. These include weekly large group discussions (dinner included), weekly small group studies, and a weekly volunteering project where we prepare and deliver meals and fellowship to those experiencing homelessness throughout Cleveland. By gathering together to prepare meals for those in need, we hope to not only provide assistance and nutrition, but to also foster lasting bonds with our local city. The group will meet throughout the year to prepare meals to bring to unhoused individuals in the Cleveland area, and will organize fundraisers and resource drives to gather funds for the meals and to garner other supplies needed in the communities. A proactive approach to reducing the negative impacts associated with substance use at the individual and community level. We provide a space for classmates to develop Christian community, study the Word of God, pray, and explore the implications of our faith in our future professions. Members with any and all dietary restrictions are welcome! We will make a concerted effort to find members who are practiced cooks in areas such as vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free cooking techniques and incorporate their knowledge into the club. There are many paths to critical care, such as internal medicine, emergency medicine, general surgery, anesthesia, and more. The goal of the Critical Care Interest Group will be to provide students the opportunity to learn more about this exciting field, the roles that each specialty plays within the critical care setting, and the training required. This will be accomplished through various speakers, panel discussions, as well as shadowing and research opportunities. Culinary Medicine Initiative Student Leaders: Brianna P. Matthew Emails: [email protected] Faculty Advisor: The Culinary Medicine Initiative (CMI) merges the art of cooking and the science of medicine to promote health and wellness. Through CMI, medical students will gain hands-on experience developing recipes and cooking nutrient-rich dishes from diverse cultures and backgrounds. As a result, students will be better equipped to guide their future patients on integrating healthy, budget-friendly meals into their diet. Members will learn how food insecurity and social determinants of health can increase barriers to healthcare access. CMI hopes to collaborate with nonprofit organizations throughout Cleveland to help alleviate the burden of food insecurity. Every contribution is critical to creating a world where the youth of the West Bank and Gaza have a chance at a better life. HEAL provides urgent and long-term solutions to Gaza’s youth, offering hope and opportunities where they are needed most. Through Health, Education, Aid, and Leadership, HEAL Palestine is working to provide every young Palestinian a chance for a brighter future. The mission of Horizons is to utilize the field of medicine to empower inner city teenagers as learners and teachers, in order to support their intrinsic motivations to achieve academically. Patients receive blood transfusions about once a month, and during each transfusion buddies are encouraged to visit and have fun with their patient during their stay. During the stay, medical students partake in activities with their patients, including games, puzzles, and arts and crafts. Patients with sickle cell disease suffer from health complications and implicit biases in healthcare. Through this program, students not only have fun but they also develop a better understanding of the disease and those affected by it.
