Our mission is to promote awareness and understanding of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) and all sexual and gender minority (SGM) communities through our committees spanning across advocacy, mentorship and professional development, education, and social and wellness.

Case Med Pride is the Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) School of Medicine (SOM) LGBT student group which focuses on LGBT patient curriculum, student affairs (recruitment, retention, and support), and local advocacy work with other CWRU LGBT groups. We serve on CSR's Diversity Affairs Committee to work with other student groups on enhancing curriculum and events, as the CWRU American Medical Student Association Gender & Sexuality Caucus, and as the CWRU Medical Student Pride Alliance Chapter. Annually, we coordinate the LGBT Health Foundations of Clinical Medicine Elective, Safe Zone Training, Second Look LGBT Mixer, and the New LGBT Student Welcome Party.
The M/M Nathan Borenstein and M/M Boris Benes Endowment Fund - CWRU SOM Scholarship for LGBT Students. If you are applying for need-based aid for the academic year and were awarded a need based financial aid scholarship/loan from the University in the past, you may be eligible for a need based scholarship from the M/M Nathan Borenstein and M/M Boris Benes Endowment Fund. This scholarship is available for LGBT students in the School of Medicine across all classes. If you are interested in receiving this scholarship, please indicate your preference in the special circumstances section of the Case Financial Aid application when you apply for need-based financial aid for the upcoming academic year. - The GLBT National Help Center: The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) National Help Center, founded in 1996, is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization that provides vital peer-support, community connections and resource information to people with questions regarding sexual orientation and/or gender identity. - National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline provides free and confidential emotional support to people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. (800) 784-2433
- Using Inclusive Language in Healthcare: This guide provides a useful reference on vocabulary and language for more inclusive healthcare.
Cleveland/Akron Resources:
- The MetroHealth Pride Clinic: The first clinic in the region and one of only 12 health centers in the country devoted to serving the health needs of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community.
- Center for LGBTQ+ Care: Cleveland Clinic’s Center for LGBTQ+ Care opened at the Chagrin Falls Family Health Center and Lakewood Family Health Center.
- LGBT Community Center of Greater Cleveland: The 3rd LGBT center to be established in the nation coordinating local advocacy and community events for all (youth, 50+, families, QTPOC, etc.)
- PFLAG Cleveland: Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays: Part of a national organization, the local Cleveland group holds meetings to engage families and friends in supporting LGBT persons
- TransOhio: Services, education, support, and advocacy to promote and improve the health, safety, and life experience of the Ohio transgender individual and community
- Margie's Hope/TransAlive Support Group: Margie's Hope will soon have a transitional living program that will help homeless transgender clients to secure stable housing and employment as well as other necessary services. (330) 240-1600
- TransFamily: TransFamily is a transgender support group in the Cleveland, Ohio metropolitan area. Family members, friends, parents and spouse are welcome at the meetings. (216) 691-4357
CWRU Resources:
- Preferred Name Policy: Although you cannot change your @case.edu email prefix (i.e [email protected]), you may change how you are searched for and what your first name appears as on the CWRU network. The name change will also be reflected on your homepage (Student Center) in SIS, advising rosters, grade rosters, and class rosters.
- Transgender Healthcare Policy: In-Network: 80% of eligible charges are paid for by The Plan, the remaining 20% of charges are the responsibility of the student. Gender Affirmation Surgery Limited to $50,000 per Plan year. Hormone Therapy is covered under the prescription benefit.
- LGBT Center: The CWRU LGBT Center involved in advocacy for campus wide LGBT climate, multiple discussion groups (asexual, bisexual, gender nonconforming, LGBT POC)
- LGBTA Committee: LGBT faculty and staff that work on campus climate for faculty, staff, and students
- LGBT-friendly CWRU Counseling Services: Jes Sellers and Jane Daroff provide student mental health and wellness services and are an integral part of the Cleveland LGBT community
- Office of Multicultural Affairs: Focuses on diversity and inclusion among students
- Office of Inclusion, Diversity, and Equal Opportunity: Focuses on diversity and inclusion among faculty, staff, and students
- Community Concerns Reporting System: A formalized and streamlined process to address complaints about bias-related incidents on campus, CWRU is following many other universities in implementing this initiative
- Diversity 360: A formalized 3-hour module to discuss and address bias among faculty, staff, administration, and students
