Welcome to the Healthy Heart Clinic!
Who are we?
We are a Case Western Reserve University SOM student-run group working in affiliation with the Metro Health J Glen Smith Health Center.
What do we do?
We conduct patient interviews, which involve:
-screening for signs of cardiovascular health (blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol, BMI)
-listening to heart and lung sounds
-coaching patients through motivational interviewing on how to improve heart health
-coordinating patient care with the medical team at J Glen Smith Health Center
Why volunteer with us?
-Practice your communication workshop, physical diagnosis, and motivational interviewing skills!
-Gain first-hand experience interacting with real patients!
-Learn more about cardiovascular health and apply your knowledge to patients in the clinical setting!
-Make positive impact in the lives of others in the local community!
Hear from our previous volunteers! (Kept anonymous)
"I think the most enjoyable experience was talking to the patients. Both of the patients we saw had never had their blood glucose or cholesterol measured in the past, so it was nice to be able to measure it for the patients for the first time. "
"I think the most enjoyable thing for me was just having a chance to talk with people and in a very general way explain to them ways that they can improve their health. I feel that most were very receptive of the suggestions. "
"My most enjoyable moment was having a gentleman come in whose blood tests were completely normal and was attempting to live a healthy lifestyle. He had told us about his family's struggles with diabetes and how he wanted to avoid that fate. He exercised and ate a balanced diet. It was refreshing to encourage continuance of good behavior, rather than attempt to motivate change."
"I feel like I learned a little more about effective counseling. I had not had the chance to do that much yet, and I think that exposure to the situation is important."
Interested in getting involved?
Our volunteer schedule runs from 1:15-3:15 on Mondays and Wednesdays. We are flexible with scheduling dates in which you will work with another medical student for the day.
Orientation/training is usually held at the beginning of each semester. Look out for a class email or feel free to contact one of the student leaders!
